Car Air Conditioning Repair Services in Dallas & Fort Worth, TX

Car AC Repairs

What could be more important for Dallas area drivers than keeping the AC blowing cool in your vehicle? When stepping into a hot car on a 105 degree day all you want is ice cold air and you want it now. Our ASE-Certified mechanics are ready to handle all of your automotive AC needs. Our mechanics are trained to pinpoint the source of any problem and work to quickly repair it.

Cabin/Air Conditioning Filter Replacement

Your cabin filter can affect your system’s performance. A clogged cabin air filter causes your blower motor to overwork, overheat, and suffer from premature failure. Not to mention the fact that impeded airflow requires you to turn your AC up higher, having yet another negative impact on your fuel economy. Drivers Edge can replace your engine air filter and help restore your AC system to its normal function.

Auto AC System Basics

The air conditioning system in the modern automobile is tremendously complex. There are a number of parts, which comprise your system, such as the compressor, receiver/drier (accumulator), orifice tube or expansion valve (filter) and more. Frequently Asked Questions

Blowing warm air is, of course, the most common sign of problems, but there are other things that point to the need for car AC repair. These are just some of the warning signs you may notice even before your AC quits blowing cold:

  • Odd noises: If you’re hearing clicks, rattles, or any other noises you haven’t heard coming from your AC before, you may have debris such as twigs or leaves in your system, or even a nest built by a rat that’s set up housekeeping under your hood. You may also have a condenser that needs replacement.
  • Odors: Your vehicle’s AC system should never emit any kind of odors. If it does, it could be a sign that condensation or humidity has caused mildew or mold to grow. Have your AC checked promptly, especially if you or your passengers have allergies, asthma, or other chronic respiratory issues.
  • Dampness in the passenger compartment: Your vehicle’s air conditioning system acts as a dehumidifier, taking moisture out of the air and draining it outside of your car. (That’s why you may see water dripping from your car after you’ve parked it, which is normal.) When the water flow to the outside gets blocked, it can back up and drain into your vehicle’s interior compartment.

If you’ve seen any of these signs, book an appointment with our car AC repair specialists today.

If your car’s air conditioner isn’t blowing cold air, the compressor is near the top of the list of possible causes.

A car AC compressor wears over time like most any part in a vehicle. As it begins to fail, you may not only notice warmer air temperatures—you may also hear loud squeals and grinding noises as the compressor is running. Another potential issue is a seized compressor clutch.

Some parts in a compressor can be replaced or repaired, but it’s often more economical to replace the entire compressor. Your Driver’s Edge mechanics can inspect the components in your AC system to identify the problem, then recommend the best AC repair solution. Get in touch with the Driver’s Edge location that’s convenient to your home or workplace or book an appointment online now.

There are car AC recharge kits available for do-it-yourselfers, but we don’t recommend tackling this task on your own. There are important differences in every vehicle’s AC system, such as how much refrigerant it can hold. Because evacuating all of the refrigerant from the system is the only method for determining how much is in it, there’s a risk of overcharging the system, which can be just as harmful as undercharging it.

Another problem with DIY AC recharge kits is that some of them contain substances that can clog up the compressor, pump, hoses, or other parts of the system.

Having a professional recharge your AC can help you avoid potentially expensive repairs or compressor replacement caused by using an over-the-counter recharge kit. To make sure that a low refrigerant level is at fault for a car AC that isn’t performing as it should, come into your nearest Driver’s Edge location.

There isn’t a standard schedule for car AC recharging. If your vehicle’s AC isn’t performing well, our mechanics will inspect your entire system, including checking your refrigerant level and checking for leaks. In some cases, your car’s AC system may need to have all of the refrigerant evacuated and refilled.

The brand name “Freon” is commonly used to refer to a number of different refrigerants. In the past, R-12 Freon was used in car air conditioners but the EPA outlawed its use due to the chlorofluorocarbons it contained and its detrimental effects on the ozone layer. Today’s formulas are safer and cleaner.

All types of car refrigerants work in a similar way, regulating the temperature as it cycles through gas and liquid states.

There are several car air filters in a vehicle, including one that filters contaminants in the engine, one that filters fuel, and a cabin filter that keeps dirt, dust, pollen and other particles from coming through your car’s air conditioning system and into your passenger compartment. All of these filters will become contaminated over time and lose effectiveness. When your car cabin air filter is clogged, air flow from your vents will be weak, unfiltered air will circulate in your car’s interior, and your AC’s motor may burn up as the AC works harder to move and cool the air. For specific recommendations on when to replace your cabin air filters, refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual or schedule an appointment at Driver’s Edge to have your AC system checked.

An online search will yield plenty of DIY tips, but there are good reasons to have an experienced automotive AC repair mechanics do the job:

  • Modern car air conditioning systems have become more complex with features such as computer-driven climate control functionality. At Driver’s Edge, we have the right tools and up-to-the-minute knowledge to properly evaluate all of the components in the system and make accurate diagnoses of any issues.
  • The handling and disposal of Freon must be done properly according to EPA rules. Freon is toxic and contact with it should be avoided.
  • Some warranties can be voided if you make DIY air conditioning repairs to your car. You’re not required to go to a dealership for AC repairs, however—your warranty will stay in effect if you bring your car to be serviced by the factory-trained mechanics at Driver’s Edge.
  • Some repairs require specialized tools that you aren’t likely to have. Using the wrong tool, or using it improperly, may make the problem worse.

Whether your AC isn’t blowing air that’s as cold as it should be or you want to be prepared for hot weather or a long road trip, Driver’s Edge has all of the auto AC services you need. Bring your car to Driver’s Edge for:

  • A performance test
  • An inspection of your compressor
  • A check for visible leaks in your AC system’s components
  • A check of your Freon pressure
  • A test of vent temperatures
